In: Invisalign® Clear Aligners
Invisalign works only when worn properly. Here is the daily routine that keeps your aligners clear, your teeth healthy, and your treatment on schedule.
The 22-hour rule
Invisalign aligners must be worn at least 20-22 hours per day to move teeth on schedule. The hours add up quickly: 30-minute lunch + 60-minute dinner + 30-minute breakfast + 15 minutes brushing = 2:15 off. Anything more than that, and treatment stalls.
Common stalls: forgetting aligners after lunch, drinking coffee with aligners out, snacking throughout the afternoon. Treat aligner removal as a discrete event - out, eat, brush, back in.
Daily cleaning routine
- After every removal: rinse aligners with cool water (not hot - warps the plastic).
- Once a day: gently brush aligners with a soft toothbrush and water (no toothpaste - abrasives cloud the plastic).
- Once a week: soak in Invisalign Cleaning Crystals, denture cleaner, or 50/50 vinegar-water solution for 15-20 minutes.
- Avoid: colored mouthwash, hot water, alcohol-based cleaners, dish soap (residual taste), and toothpaste (scratches plastic).
Aligners should be virtually invisible. If they look cloudy after a week, the cleaning routine needs work.
Eating and drinking rules
- Remove for all meals and snacks. Even quick bites - chewing on aligners cracks them.
- Water only with aligners in. Coffee, tea, juice, soda all stain aligners and trap sugar against teeth.
- No hot drinks with aligners in - heat warps them.
- Brush before reinserting. Food trapped under aligners against enamel for 22 hours = high cavity risk.
- Carry a travel toothbrush for after-lunch reinsertion.
Switching to new aligners
Most patients switch every 1-2 weeks per their treatment plan. The new set typically feels tight for the first 2-3 days - that is the planned movement. Switch in the evening so the worst tightness happens during sleep. If a new set feels loose, it usually means the previous set wasn't fully tracking - call us before continuing.
Common mistakes that slow treatment
- Wearing less than 20 hours/day.
- Skipping aligner refinements when the dentist asks you to come in.
- Losing an aligner and waiting "until the next set." Most providers prefer you back-track to the previous set or order a replacement.
- Eating with aligners in.
- Drinking colored beverages with aligners in.
- Skipping the retainer phase at completion.
- Not brushing before reinsertion.
- Cracking aligners - usually from chewing or drying out. Order a replacement.
At every visit we evaluate aligner tracking. If we see the teeth aren't keeping up, we order refinement aligners - included at no charge in most plans.
Frequently asked questions
- What if I forget an aligner for 12 hours?
- Once is fine. Recurring patterns of poor wear cause treatment to fall behind. The aligners track your teeth's position; missed wear means refinement aligners later.
- Can I chew gum with aligners?
- No. Gum sticks to aligners and is very hard to remove.
- Will Invisalign affect my speech?
- Slight lisp for the first 1-3 days with each new set is common; resolves quickly as the tongue adapts.
- Can I whiten my teeth during Invisalign?
- Many providers, including ours, offer simultaneous whitening - using the aligners as whitening trays. Discuss with your dentist for the right protocol.
