What a millisievert (mSv) is

Radiation dose is measured in millisieverts (mSv). The average American receives about 3 mSv per year from natural background sources. For perspective: 1 banana ≈ 0.0001 mSv (potassium-40), 1 cross-country flight ≈ 0.04 mSv, 1 chest X-ray ≈ 0.1 mSv, 1 mammogram ≈ 0.4 mSv, 1 chest CT ≈ 7 mSv. Dental X-rays are at the very low end of this scale.

Specific dental X-ray doses

Modern digital dental X-rays:

  • Bitewing (single image): ~0.005 mSv - 1 day of background, or 1/2 a banana.
  • Full-mouth series (18-20 images): ~0.075 mSv - 9 days of background.
  • Panoramic (single rotating image): ~0.025 mSv - 3 days of background.
  • CBCT 3D scan (small-field): 0.05-0.5 mSv depending on settings.

That bitewing dose is 1/8 of one cross-country flight. Eight bitewings equals one round-trip plane ride.

How modern digital imaging reduced doses

Three major improvements over film: digital sensors are far more efficient at capturing X-ray energy (allowing exposure times to drop 70-90%), software can post-process images for diagnostic clarity (eliminating "second exposures"), and targeted beam collimation restricts the X-ray beam to the exact area being imaged. The combination has dropped dental imaging doses dramatically over the last 20 years.

Protection during imaging

Standard protective measures: lead apron with thyroid collar, targeted beam collimation, pregnancy disclosure (we routinely ask), as-needed protocol (only when clinically indicated), and time interval guidelines (we don't take X-rays "every visit" by default; bitewings yearly for most adults).

Why X-rays matter

Despite the very low dose, X-rays catch problems invisible to direct exam: cavities between teeth, bone loss from gum disease, abscesses at root tips, cysts and tumors in the jaw, impacted wisdom teeth, hidden fractures, and bone density for implant planning. The risk-benefit calculation favors X-rays at recommended intervals - the small radiation risk is far outweighed by early detection.

Frequently asked questions

I had X-rays at my last dentist; do I need them again?
Not necessarily. Bring or have transferred your recent X-rays - most offices, including ours, can use existing images if recent and high-quality. We retake only what is clinically needed.
Are dental X-rays safe during pregnancy?
Generally yes, especially with lead apron and thyroid collar - the dose to a developing fetus is negligible. Most dentists defer non-emergency X-rays to after delivery as a precaution.
How often should adults get X-rays?
Most adults: bitewings yearly, full-mouth series or panoramic every 3-5 years. Higher-risk patients may have bitewings every 6 months. Lower-risk patients with stable history may stretch to every 18-24 months.
Do dental X-rays cause cancer?
There is no demonstrated link between dental X-rays and cancer at modern doses with appropriate protection. The theoretical risk is low and far outweighed by the benefit of early disease detection.
