A lost or broken retainer can cause meaningful tooth drift in just weeks. Here is the step-by-step plan to minimize damage and replace it efficiently.
Immediate steps if you lost or broke your retainer
- Don't panic. A few days won't cause major drift in most cases.
- Check for a backup - your last Invisalign aligner, or a retainer from a previous round.
- Wear the backup full-time until you can be seen.
- Call our office to schedule replacement - we usually fit a replacement scan within a week.
- Don't use OTC mail-order retainer kits during the gap - quality varies and a poor fit accelerates drift.
How quickly do teeth drift?
Drift speed varies by patient and time since orthodontic treatment:
- First year post-orthodontics: Significant drift can occur in 2-4 weeks.
- Years 1-3: Mild drift in 4-8 weeks; visible to the patient.
- Years 3+: Slower drift; weeks of no retainer often produces tightness, not visible movement.
If you've been retainer-free for years already and your bite hasn't shifted, you have more flexibility. Recently-finished orthodontics is the most time-sensitive.
Replacement process
At our office:
- Quick exam and digital scan - about 20-30 minutes. Some replacements are based on a previous scan if recent.
- Lab fabrication - typically 1-2 weeks for clear retainers, slightly longer for Hawley.
- Some same-week 3D-printed retainers are possible for clear-tray replacements.
- Delivery and fit check - adjustments if any.
- Refresh wear schedule if you've been off retainers for weeks.
Cost: $150-$400 per arch depending on type.
When teeth have drifted significantly
If you've been without retainers for months or years and notice obvious drift:
- A new retainer alone won't pull teeth back - it just holds the new (drifted) position.
- A short Invisalign refinement (5-15 aligners) often re-aligns mild relapse for $1,500-$3,000.
- For more significant relapse, full re-treatment may be needed.
- We discuss the trade-offs at the consultation - sometimes accepting slight drift and retaining is the best answer.
Preventing future losses
- Always store retainers in their case when not wearing - never wrapped in a napkin (the #1 way retainers get thrown away).
- Keep the case in a consistent location - bedside table, never in the kitchen.
- Travel with a hard case - soft cases get crushed in luggage.
- Keep dogs and toddlers away - both find retainers irresistible.
- Order a backup pair if you're prone to losing things - most offices offer a discount for duplicate.
- Replace before they fail - at the first sign of crack, distortion, or poor fit, schedule a replacement instead of waiting.
Frequently asked questions
- My retainer cracked - can it be repaired?
- Sometimes. Hawley wires can be soldered. Clear retainers usually cannot be reliably repaired - fabricate a new one. Bring the broken pieces in.
- Can I use OTC retainer kits while waiting?
- We don't recommend them - fit is highly variable and a poor fit can accelerate drift more than going without a retainer briefly.
- How much will replacement cost?
- Clear (Essix): $150-$300 per arch. Hawley: $200-$400 per arch. Bonded retainer repair or replacement: $200-$500. Many offices offer a discount for replacement of recently-fabricated retainers.
- Will insurance cover replacement?
- Sometimes, particularly if there is documented orthodontic history. We pre-verify before fabrication.
