A crown can be made from at least five different materials, each with distinct strengths. Here is the practical comparison for choosing the right one.
Zirconia - strength leader
Zirconia is the strongest tooth-colored crown material - comparable to metal in fracture resistance. Modern multi-layer zirconia is also reasonably aesthetic. Best for: Back teeth, long-span bridges, implant restorations, heavy grinders. Lifespan: 15-20+ years. Limitations: Pure zirconia is opaque - less ideal than e.max for very visible front teeth.
E.max (lithium disilicate) - aesthetic leader
Highly translucent ceramic that mimics natural enamel light transmission. Best for: Front-tooth crowns and veneers, premolar crowns. Lifespan: 15+ years with good care. Limitations: Less suitable than zirconia for the very back molars or for heavy-clenchers.
PFM (porcelain-fused-to-metal) - the legacy hybrid
A metal core capped with tooth-colored porcelain. Workhorse material from the 1970s through 2000s. Best for: Long-span posterior bridges. Lifespan: 10-15 years typical. Limitations: Thin "metal margin" can show as a dark line if recession occurs; less aesthetic for front teeth than all-ceramic alternatives. Most offices have shifted away from PFM for routine cases.
Gold and gold-alloy - longevity leader
Gold inlays, onlays, and full-cast crowns can last 30+ years. Best for: Back molars in patients who prioritize longevity over color match, or in heavy grinders. Lifespan: 30+ years routinely. Limitations: Gold-colored, higher up-front cost, less insurance-friendly. Increasingly used only by patients specifically requesting it.

- Do crowns require special care?
