Chipped or Knocked-Out Tooth This Summer? Act Fast

Chipped or Knocked-Out Tooth This Summer? Act Fast

- Summer in Lodi means pools, bikes, ballgames, and more than a few trips to the snack table. It also means dental mishaps. A diving board slip, a spill off a bike, an elbow during a pickup game, or a bite into ice or hard candy can chip, crack, or even knock out a tooth in a second. When it happens, a little calm and a few quick steps can make a real difference. Here is what to do for the most common summer scenarios, and when to reach out to us.

A Chipped or Cracked Tooth

A chipped tooth is one of the most common summer visits. It often looks worse than it feels, so take a breath first.

  • Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clear away any small fragments.
  • If your lip or cheek is bleeding, press a clean piece of gauze or a damp cloth on the spot for a few minutes.
  • A cold compress on the outside of your cheek helps with swelling and soreness.
  • Save any larger broken pieces in a small container. Bring them with you, since we can sometimes use them.

Even a small chip is worth a look. What feels minor can leave the inner layers of the tooth exposed, and enamel, the hard outer shell of the tooth, does not grow back on its own. If the tooth is sensitive to air or temperature, that is a good sign to be seen soon. Call our Lodi office during business hours and we will work to fit you in as quickly as we can.

A Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

A fully knocked-out adult tooth is the one true race against the clock. The first hour matters most, and the sooner you act, the better the chances of saving it. Stay calm and move quickly.

1. Pick it up by the crown, the white chewing part. Never touch the root. 2. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or clean water for a second or two. Do not scrub it, and do not wrap it in a tissue. 3. Try to place it back in the socket the right way around and hold it there by biting softly on a clean cloth. 4. If you cannot reinsert it, keep it moist in a cup of milk. Tucking it inside the cheek can work for an older child or adult. Plain water is a last resort. 5. Get to a dentist right away. Time is the single biggest factor here.

Because minutes count, it helps to understand the knocked-out tooth thirty-minute window before an accident ever happens, so the whole family knows the drill. A baby tooth is different. Do not try to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth, but still give us a call so we can advise you.

A Lost Filling or Crown

Sticky summer treats like taffy and caramel are famous for pulling out fillings and crowns. It is rarely an emergency, but it needs attention before the exposed tooth becomes sensitive or damaged.

  • If you still have the crown, rinse it and keep it safe in a small bag.
  • Keep the area clean and chew on the other side for now.
  • Over-the-counter dental cement from the pharmacy can cover an exposed spot for a day or two, but it is a stopgap, not a fix.

Call us and we will get you scheduled to have it properly re-cemented or repaired.

A Bad Toothache

A toothache that flares up mid-summer is your body asking for help. Do not ignore it, and do not try to tough it out.

  • Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss around the sore tooth to remove trapped food.
  • An over-the-counter pain reliever can ease things until you are seen.
  • Never place aspirin directly on the gum, since it can burn the tissue.
  • Watch for swelling in the face or jaw. That deserves prompt care.

Persistent or worsening pain is a reason to call our office so we can find the cause and help you feel better.

When to Call and When to Seek Urgent Care

Our office is open Monday through Thursday, 8 AM to 5 PM. If a dental emergency happens during those hours, call us at (209) 369-3617 right away and we will do our best to see you as soon as possible. You can learn more about how we handle urgent visits on our emergency dental services page.

We do not staff an after-hours emergency phone line. If a serious injury happens in the evening, on a weekend, or while you are traveling away from Lodi, Stockton, or Galt, go to the nearest urgent care or hospital emergency room, especially for heavy bleeding, a possible broken jaw, or trouble breathing or swallowing. Then follow up with us as soon as we reopen.
